How VA Combined Rating Math Works

The VA does not simply add your disability percentages together. Instead, it uses "whole-person theory" — each additional rating is applied to the remaining healthy percentage, not the total.

Example: 50% + 30% does NOT equal 80%

Step 1: Start at 100% healthy
Step 2: Apply 50% → 100% × 0.50 = 50% disabled, 50% remaining
Step 3: Apply 30% to remaining → 50% × 0.30 = 15%
Step 4: Total = 50% + 15% = 65%
Step 5: VA rounds to nearest 10 → 70% combined rating

This is why a veteran with six 10% ratings does not have a 60% combined rating — they have a 47% combined, which rounds to 50%.

What Is the Bilateral Factor?

If you have disabilities affecting both sides of your body (left knee + right knee, both shoulders, etc.), the VA adds an extra percentage called the bilateral factor. It's calculated as 10% of the combined bilateral rating, added before the final rounding.

Most online calculators ignore the bilateral factor. The Vet100 calculator includes it automatically.

What Vet100's Calculator Includes

Why Your Combined Rating Matters

Monthly Compensation Jumps at Key Thresholds

The difference between 60% and 70% can be hundreds of dollars per month. Understanding your combined rating helps you identify which additional conditions would push you to the next threshold — and prioritize accordingly.

100% Unlocks Full Benefits

At 100% (schedular or TDIU), veterans receive the maximum monthly payment plus eligibility for CHAMPVA (healthcare for dependents), Chapter 35 education benefits, property tax exemptions in most states, and commissary/exchange access.
